Hundreds of homes near Westport to get Fibre Broadband in August 2017

Almost five hundred homes in the surrounding areas  of Westport will have access to high-speed fibre broadband from the first week of August 2017, according to Mayo-based broadband company Westnet.

The premises in question are located in three areas outside the west Mayo town: the Golf Course Road, Carrowholly and Rosmoney; along the Castlebar road, including Sheeaun, Derrygorman, and Cogaula; and along the Ballinrobe road.

With direct fibre to the home, guaranteed broadband speeds of at least 150Mb/s and up to 1,000Mb/s are available. This future-proof technology allows for near-instant downloading of music, movies and games, and streaming high-quality YouTube and Netflix videos, even in 4K quality, without buffering. Homes, home workers and businesses alike can benefit from the cost savings of communication technologies such as Skype to replace landlines.

Paul Cunnane, Westnet’s CEO, explained: “This is the latest expansion of fibre connections being made available as part of the nationwide rollout of fibre. Building on the success of the initial pilot project in Belcarra and Manulla, and the subsequent launch of fibre services in Lecanvey, these 500 homes are the latest to be able to avail of broadband services that are comparable to the high speeds available in cities throughout the world.

“These fibre services are being rolled out on a commercial basis by open eir, and they are being made available on an open access basis so that internet service providers, such as Westnet, can connect these premises. We’re often thought of as a provider of wireless broadband, but we’ve been providing fibre services for over a year now, and we are happy to be able to combine our track record of local knowledge and excellent customer service with the high speeds that can only be delivered via fibre.”

Westnet is a Castlebar-based internet service provider established in 2005 to bring high-quality broadband to rural Mayo. Since then it has grown to employ more than a dozen local people, providing reliable broadband services to homes, businesses and schools throughout the region. Details of the products on offer, including fibre services, can be found at www.westnet.ie.
